Code In The Community (CITC) 2020

ABOUT

Programme

Google’s Code In The Community (CITC) is a large-scale coding programme to get children from disadvantaged backgrounds interested in coding. The programme not only focuses on equipping students with digital literacy skills but also emphasises leadership development, presentation skills and teamwork to help children stay curious and build resilience.

CITC will be offering a new follow-on Level 2 Applications programme for the students who have graduated from the Level 1 Foundation programme. The curriculum for this will build upon students’ learnings from the Level 1 programme, while incorporating a maker element to apply their learnings, introducing more complex concepts like design thinking and solving defined problems.

Both the Level 1 Foundations and Level 2 Applications program will be structured as a 16-hour curriculum conducted over 8 lessons of 2 hours each.

This programme is for students aged 8-12 for Scratch and 13-16 for Python in 2020.

Level 1 Foundations

Scratch course (8 – 12 years old)

Students will learn the basics of computational thinking through Scratch, an interactive software program, and gain a foundation in computer science through fun and interactive lessons.

Python course (13 – 16 years old)

Students will be introduced to basic computer science concepts through Python, a text-based programming language. Real-life applications will be included to introduce essential fundamental knowledge for programmers.

Level 2 Applications (NEW!) – only for those who completed Level 1

Scratch course (8 – 12 years old)

Building upon the knowledge from the Foundation course, students will get to reinforce their learning in a different context of hardware, and learn how to use both software and hardware to create a solution; this will include the use of Strawbees and a Quirkbot.

Python course (13 – 16 years old)

Students who completed Python Level 1 Foundations will now get to learn about microcontrollers and apply their Python skills in a more physical space; this will include the use of Strawbees and a micro:bit.

Upon successful completion of each level of the program, students will be presented with a digital certificate to acknowledge their achievement. Students need to have completed a Level 1 Foundations course in order to qualify for Level 2 Applications.

Give your child a taste of computer science!
