Project Read gives young children the gift of reading. Volunteers visit the children at their homes and read to them, with the aim of helping them to overcome reading difficulties and cultivating a reading habit in them.

Objective

  • To equip Indian Children with adequate reading skills so that they are not at a disadvantage when they begin preschool /primary school
  • To cultivate the habit of reading from a young age

Programme Description

  • Each child is matched to a trained volunteer
  • Volunteers will visit the homes of families once a week for 1 hour for a period of 6 months
  • Holistic assistance: Neu PC, bursaries and SINDA programmes and services provided to children

Target Group

  • Children between the ages of 4 to 8

Criteria

  • Parent’s Educational Qualification: Secondary 4 & below
  • Income Level: S$2000 & below per household
  • Children with reading difficulties from low-income families and have parents who are unable to help them read

Qualified Volunteers

  • Training sessions are conducted to equip our volunteers with the necessary skills set before they are deployed

Provision of resource materials

  • Each child will be given a Book Pack which consists of materials that encourages writing and book making (includes stationary set, glue, markers, learning Journal etc.)
  • At the end of the 24 sessions, the child would be awarded with his own “Book of Stories

Evaluation to assess student’s performance

  • Diagnostic assessment is done before reading instruction begins so that the child’s prior learning and current reading level is identified
  • Formative assessment is an ongoing basis to track the child’s progress towards achievement targets. The child receives the feedback immediately. The Learning Journal is used as a tool for formative assessment
