Reading Circle
Reading Circle is a centre based reading programme. Volunteers conduct reading and enrichment sessions to children between the ages of 4 to 9, with the aim of helping them to overcome reading difficulties and cultivating a reading habit in them.
Objective
- To equip Indian Children with adequate reading skills so that they are not at a disadvantage when they begin pre-school /primary school
- To cultivate the habit of reading from a young age
Programme Description
- Small group reading session. Volunteer to Child ratio of 1:5
- Conducted weekly, mostly on weekends for 1.5 to 2 hours per session
- Spearheaded by the People’s Association Indian Activates Executive Committees (PAIAECs) ,other grassroots organizations, religious organizations and Indian organisations
- Volunteers use creative and fun methods to encourage reading
- Workshop for parents on developing the reading habit in their children
Target Group
- Open to all Indian children aged 4 to 9 years old
Criteria
- Open to all children who wish to benefit from the programme
Qualified Volunteers
- Training sessions are conducted to equip our volunteers with the necessary skills set before they are deployed
Provision of resource materials
- Storybooks for pre-schoolers, Pri1 level and Pri 2 level
- Big books for storytelling session
- Educational games (Boggles, Junior Scrabble)
- Learning Journal
- Stationary Set
- Report Card (for student’s assessment)
Evaluation to assess student’s performance
- Diagnostic assessment is done before reading instruction begins so that the child’s prior learning and current reading level is identified
- Formative assessment is an ongoing basis to track the child’s progress towards achievement targets. The child receives the feedback immediately. The Learning Journal is used as a tool for formative assessment
