Address by Mr K Barathan, CEO, SINDA at the Positive Youth Development Awards Night 2014 on 22 November 2014 at the MDIS Auditorium

Mr S Dhanabalan, Life Trustee, SINDA,

Mr N G Chanrai, Managing Director of Kewalram Singapore and Group CEO of the Kewalram Chanrai Group,

Parents and Award Recipients,

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

A very good evening, and thank you for your presence here at SINDA’s inaugural Positive Youth Development Awards Night.

Today we commend our youth, those who were motivated to excel, grow from strength to strength and develop a positive outlook in life. It would have been no easy task, but I am certain that the determination and perseverance of our youth would have been pivotal to their success. The level of personal transformation that we can witness in this auditorium has been tremendous and serves as an inspiration to all of us.

These youth were particpants in three programmes:

  1. Guidance and Mentorship programme or GAME, which allows our youth to pursue an area of interest, whilst inculcating positive skills and values;
  2. Senior Victory, a school-based motivation and leadership programme; and
  3. Camp Arise, an experiential camp and related activities that allow our youth to benefit from applied learning outside of the classroom

SINDA conducts a series of youth programmes, through which one ting has been evident—our youth are filled with immense potential. They are creative, enthusiastic, and more importantly, they are passionate about the things that they set out to achieve. I am glad that our youth initiatives motivate and support our youth, and sometimes guide our youths back, when they lose direction.

The development, grooming and motivation of our youth are a key focus of SINDA’s. We envision our youth as leaders and game-changers of the future, and we want to ensure that they equipped with the necessary skillsets and knowledge to do so.

This of course, cannot be the effort of SINDA alone. It requires the passion and dedication of other community and partner organisations, for social good. Such passion has been evident in the Kewalram Chanrai Group, which has been a gracious and magnanimous donor. Their contributions have allowed us to run enhanced motivational and mentorship programmes, and impact countless youth, their peers and their families. On behalf of SINDA, and on behalf of all the youth, I thank you Mr Chanrai, for being SINDA’s staunch partner and a believer in our efforts to empower our youth.

Tonight, is about the celebration of success—the success of all youth here. Each one of you has done tremendously well, and I hope you will continue to do yourself, your parents and the community proud. Your commitment and dedication towards your personal transformation is an inspiration, not only to your fellow peers, but also to the community as a whole.

While you take pride in what you have achieved, my wish for you is to also show that transformation in your academics and life choices. Have the right attitude, as only that will let you push yourself further and succeed in seizing the opportunities available to you.

Parents, your children cannot have achieved this without you and your presence here today is testament to the support you have given. I am certain that your constant guidance and motivation will enable your children to grow up to become confident and capable adults. I hope that they will one day mature into responsible citizens, and contribute back to our community.

Before I conclude, I would like to thank Mr Dhanabalan for gracing this ceremony. He has been a pillar of strength to SINDA, and has taken a keen interest in SINDA’s youth development efforts. His presence today encourages our work further.

On that note, my congratulations to all the youth once again. I hope that you succeed in all that you set out do and my best wishes for the journey that lies ahead for each one of you.

Thank you and have a good evening ahead.
